My grandfather was a screenwriter and professor. In 1930s New York, he and my grandmother—a costume designer—worked with the WPA's Federal Theater Project which employed artists to create politically engaged work. He died when I was six, leaving behind plays and books on dramatic structure, full of wry notes and absurd little doodles. Reading them was how I came to know him. Why I started writing plays.
